Flour Sack Towels - Discovering the Rich History of a Household Staple
From the 1850s to the 1950s, tightly woven cotton bags were used to package everything from flour, sugar, and chicken feed to sausage and even voting ballots. These bags, known as "flour sacks" in their day, were repurposed by thrifty housewives who would wash and bleach them before cutting and sewing them into underwear, pillowcases, toys, dresses, and, most commonly, kitchen towels. The popularity of these towels was passed down from mother to daughter.
