Flour Sack "Ohia and Lehua" Kitchen Tea Towel. This eco-friendly Hawaiian dish towel was illustrated and hand-printed by Mina Wilcox with joy from her small art studio in California.

The legend of Hawaii: The Ohia tree and the Lehua blossom.
The legend states that one day, Pele met a handsome warrior named Ohia and asked him to marry her. However, Ohia had already pledged his love to Lehua. Pele became furious when Ohia turned down her marriage proposal, so she transformed him into a twisted tree. Lehua, naturally, was heartbroken. The gods took pity on Lehua and deemed it unjust to separate Ohia and Lehua. Consequently, they transformed Lehua into a flower on the Ohia tree, ensuring that the two lovers would forever remain united. Thus, according to Hawaiian folklore, plucking this flower symbolizes the separation of the lovers and that day it will rain.

Flour Sack Towels - Then and Now
From the 1850s to the 1950s, everything from flour, sugar, chicken feed, sausage, and even voting ballots was packaged in tightly woven cotton bags known as 'FLOUR SACKS.' Thrifty housewives would wash and bleach the sacks, then cut and sew them into underwear, pillowcases, toys, dresses, and, most commonly, kitchen towels. These towels are highly absorbent and lint-free, and their popularity has been passed down from mother to daughter. Today, in the United States, they are known as nostalgic towels used by grandmothers.
